NEW WORK: Grandcamp Adventures – Treasure Maps
Last week I had a pleasant surprise in the mail. Rather than bills and take-out menus a couple of print samples from Oxford University Press arrived. I contributed some illustrations too a couple of books published earlier this year from their Tree Tops series. It’s nice to see the illustrations in context.
Here are the samples in [...]
This is a water colour rendering for a client from earlier this Spring. I don’t find myself doing too much work in “real” mediums like water colour or oils anymore. Timelines and budgets have dictated other solutions.
This is one of a couple of recent sketches from the same series as the Fox character. It features his valet, the Tiger, taking tea with a dubious Snow Leopard character in a Tibetan café in Kathmandu.
This illo has been a long time coming. I sketched it ages ago and posted the b/w version of it on this blog. After several modifications it has finally been completed. It’s part of a series that started with this fox.
Set in Morocco’s most famous city Casablanca, this illustration introduces two new characters to the [...]
This Art Deco inspired illustration is currently gracing the covers of programs for the Welsh National Opera’s Spring production of The Abduction from Seraglio by Mozart.
I just want to wish everyone a very special Christmas and wonderful new year.
These are a couple of photos I took Christmas Day at the church around the corner from here. There is an eagle “couple” that winters here each year and can often be found on this church spire.
All the best, Scott
A few recent projects have reminded me how much I enjoy working on jobs that allow me to design and hand illustrate type
Well, Halloween 2009 was a bang-up success. My wife and I must have given out approx. 10 kg of sugary treats! We were swamped in succesive waves and had to turn out the lights by 8:30. Fireworks in the park across the way were excellent, the most I’ve seen in a long time… it must [...]
One thing I’ve always found rewarding is working on simple illustrated icons. Much like logos, their challenge lays in the simplicity. How can you strip down the layers of unessential detail to review the root of the communication. Here’s a couple icons I have on hand. I’ll be digging some more up in the near [...]
Well I’ve just come back from a physically exhausting, but creatively rejuvenating hike around Seymour Mountain in North Vancouver. I grew up at the foot of the mountain and used to hike around it as a kid. I always try and get onto the mountain towards the end of summer to see how the blueberries [...]
Well, its been a hectic couple of months. Lots of great work being done, but no sign of a Summer holiday here at illoLab! Yesterday evening I knew that I’d be working late again, so when I saw some curious light outside at dusk I decided to grab my camera and check it out. I [...]
Alas I’ve cleared off a few projects and am looking forward to starting the final colour illustration of a new fox painting. Here’s the b/w sketch I will be using as basis for the final.
This is a preview of another new piece of mine from the upcoming show Pencil on Paper at the Elliot Louis Gallery.
It is 8″ x 10″ and its titled: “Fox/Inari” and is based on a sculpture at the Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto. In fact all of the drawings I’m contributing to this show are [...]
A few months back I was asked to contribute some illos for this book. Looks like it’s due to hit the shelves in Autumn. The book is titled “Big Book of Contemporary Illustration” compiled and written by a swell fella named Martin Dawber and published by Batsford Books.
My contributions where a few of my Art [...]
Here’s a recent drawing of mine from an upcoming exhibition at the Elliot Louis Gallery in Vancouver. I’ve been invited to contribute to a group show titled Pencil on Paper curated by Lynn Ruscheinsky as part of Vancouver’s upcoming city-wide Drawn Festival.
The show at the Elliot Louis Gallery runs from July 18 to August 8 [...]
I’ve been commissioned to provide illustrations for Oxford University Press’s Myths and Legends series due out this fall. In the process I created this crosshatched sample drawing. It was digitally illustrated in such a way as to provide excellent reproduction with minimal ink coverage minimizing dot gain on uncoated pages while on press.
I’m thinking of [...]
The illoLab garden is now in full swing! The rhodos, and azeleas are on fire. And the camellias are dropping their heavy blossoms. This is pretty much the showiest time of the year for the garden. Our Spring here in Vancouver began dry but is now storming with occasional showers.
One of the most interesting additions [...]
